Harrell’s letter indicates Speaker should resign Talbert Black, February 19, 2013 Why is Nullification of ObamaCare, H3101, bogged down in a South Carolina House subcommittee dominated by Republicans? Think about it. South Carolina is one of the reddest states in America. We have a Republican Governor and Lt. Governor . . . . . . A Republican Treasurer and Comptroller . . . . . . even our Superintendent of Education is Republican. In fact, all nine of our statewide constitutional officers are Republican. Both of our U.S. Senators are Republican. Six of our seven U.S. Congressman are Republican. Our state General Assembly is dominated by Republicans, with a 28 – 18 majority in the State Senate and a 79 – 45 majority in the State House of Representatives. Nullifying ObamaCare should be a slam dunk! Why would any State House Republican vote against ending ObamaCare? I don’t know, but here is a clue . . . Speaker of the House Bobby Harrell is one of the most powerful politicians in the state. That has been well established in the past, but remember, he single handedly appoints every member of the House to their committees. He has a reputation for ruling the House with an iron fist. He has shown in the past that anyone who crosses him will be removed from key committee assignments. He has great control over South Carolina’s $23 billion budget. He appoints five of the ten members of the Judicial Merit Selection Committee . . . that’s the screening board for South Carolina judges. One of those five appointments is his brother . . . an apparently violation of South Carolina law and the subject of an investigation. He has many appointments to the Executive branch’s boards and commissions. And now, he is under investigation for using his office for personal political gain . . . much of official compliant revolves around his pharmaceutical company . . . a company which could stand to profit handsomely under the right conditions. There has been a constant trickle of allegations against Harrell over the last many months. The ethics complaint filed by the South Carolina Policy Council is simply the latest. Now, I don’t know if Bobby is using his influence to kill Nullification of ObamaCare. He may be perfectly innocent. We do live in a system were the accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty. But let’s consider Speaker Harrell’s own words as he called for former Governor Mark Sanford to resign. It could have been written just as easily about himself. Speaker Harrell said, . . . other disturbing facts have continued to trickle out relating to possible misconduct and potential violations of state law that have occurred during your administration. These facts have led to an ongoing Ethics Commission Investigation into a number of allegations against you. The daily trickle of allegations against you has shown that there is no end in sight to the constant distractions caused by you remaining in office. . . . Your actions have amounted to a self-inflicted wound that has forced unnecessary suffering on the people of South Carolina. This has placed tremendous stress and uncertainty on the citizens of our state at a time when we need to be focused on more important issues. . . . This is a critical time for South Carolina to have strong and effective leadership for our people. . . . Thus, for the benefit of the people of South Carolina, I respectfully request that you resign . . . I agree. Harrell should resign as Speaker of the House! Contact your Representative and insist that Bobby Harrell is unfit to remain Speaker of the House. Insist that he join the growing call for Harrell to resign. You can find your Representative and his contact information at this link. Then, and maybe only then, will we have any chance at passing Nullification of ObamaCare. Contact your representative TODAY!! Thanks for all you do! This is a fight we must win!
