You are invited Talbert Black, June 20, 2014 Next Tuesday, the 24th, the South Carolina Supreme Court will hear arguments in one of the most important cases in our state’s history. The question before the court: Are Bobby Harrell and all state lawmakers effectively immune from prosecution for public corruption? Remember, in a lower court ruling, Judge Casey Manning ruled that Bobby Harrell and all of the General Assembly are outside the normal judicial system. He ruled that Bobby Harrell cannot be prosecuted for pubic corruption unless the House Ethics Committee, staffed with his friends and colleagues, recommends his case to the Attorney General. If Judge Casey Manning’s ruling stands, then lawmakers truly will be held above the law. There’s a reason that Attorney General Alan Wilson called this decision “unprecedented in American law and unsupported by any known legal authority.” As a citizen of this state, there is something you can do to help. We need you at that hearing on June 24th. I don’t ask you to come to Columbia often, but when I do – it’s when your support is needed the most. Additionally, the South Carolina Policy Council has invited you to their office prior to the hearing to have lunch. They’d like to discuss what’s at stake, and what we should expect – and then, we can walk together to the Supreme Court as a show of support. It is important for Attorney General Alan Wilson to be able to look behind him and see a court room full of people who support the rule of law. Maybe even more important, Chief Justice Jean Toal and the rest of her court need to know that we are watching and expect them to rule that ALL South Carolina citizens are subject to the same laws. There can be no “special class” of citizens with their own private legal system! I hope you’ll make plans to join us. The Supreme Court hearing starts at 2:30 at 1231 Gervais Street. That’s right across the street from the Statehouse. The details for the lunch gathering at the SC Policy Council can be found at this link Thanks for all you do. I hope to see you next week.
